OPERA FESTIVAL
Azuriales 2018
15 and 24 August

Les Azuriales Opera Festival has, since 1997, become an annual cultural fixture on the Cote d’Azur attracting music and opera lovers from all over the world. There have been 22 years of opera, productions, recitals, competitions and master classes presented unconventionally and intimately, in the Villa Ephrussi’s patio with its wonderful acoustics, bringing the singers closer to you than the front of the stalls in a normal theatre.

Les Azuriales Opera’s mission is also the discovery and nurture of young talent; the international opera stars of tomorrow. Many of their alumni are well on the way to this. This year we welcome 10 young singers: 4 from the UK, 2 from Russia, 2 from South Africa and the others from Canada and Indonesia. There are 2 evenings at the Villa Ephrussi in which the audience will be able to revisit well known opera arias as well as discovering a lesser known piece by Francis Poulenc in intimate surrondings and a fairy-tale setting.

15 August, A  Master class, taken by Peter Lockwood (currently Rehearsal Director of Dutch National Opéra)

The performance will be followed by a reception (with substantial canapés) on the main terrace of the Villa open to all the audience.

24 August, Les Mamelles de Tirésias, surreal, comic masterpiece by Francis Poulenc, short piece in 2 acts.

It was inspired by an eponymous poem  by Guillaume Apollinaire  (which forms the prologue) premiered in 1947 at  l'Opéra-Comique. Poulenc specified in the score that it should be set “in an imaginary town on the French Riviera somewhere between Nice and Monte-Carlo”. He clearly had the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild in mind! It will be sung in French with English surtitles.
The performance will be followed by dinner under the stars in the Jardin de Sevres of the Villa Ephrussi. Places for this are very limited so book early to avoid disappointment.
