Journal intime de George Sand - "JE NE SUIS PAS SAINTE,QUOIQU’ON DISE !" – A Musical Reading

Nearly two centuries ago, the novels of George Sand (1804–1876) captivated readers, while her openly independent life shocked a deeply moralistic society. Today, we remain struck by the modernity of her private writings. Dreamy and imaginative, generous and untameable, disarmingly honest and sincere, this passionate lover faced both joy and hardship with the same yearning for happiness — which she defined as “the acceptance of life, whatever it may be.” It is her private journal that Aude de Tocqueville has adapted for this musical reading: a journey through the words of George Sand, written during a winter in Majorca when Frédéric Chopin composed his 24 Preludes.

The melodies of Chopin — as well as those of Liszt, Beethoven and Schubert — guide us through this sentimental stroll, where melancholy gives way to love. For, in the words of the author herself: To live is intoxicating! To love and to be loved — that is happiness! That is heaven!
